Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started & Membership

No experience is required. Texas Combat is built for complete beginners through advanced practitioners. We expect most new students to start with zero background, and every class is structured to meet you where you are.

Yes. Every technique is taught with control, communication, and safety as the priority. You will train under direct supervision, with clear step by step instruction. We build intensity gradually so your body and confidence can adapt together.

Wear comfortable athletic clothing that you can move in, bring water, and show up a few minutes early so we can walk you through what to expect. You do not need to buy gear before you start - we will help you with loaner equipment or recommend what to get when the time is right.

We recommend reserving your spot through our sign up form so we know to expect you and can answer questions in advance. If there is space in class, walk ins are welcome, but booking ahead makes your first visit smoother and more personal.

No hidden fees. No surprises. We offer flexible membership options including month-to-month, 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month memberships, each with its own pricing structure. All options are explained clearly before you commit. New students can get started with a 2-week unlimited trial for $49, giving you full access to classes so you can experience our training before choosing a membership.

Uniforms & Gear

When you start, you will train in a Texas Combat rash guard or T shirt and comfortable athletic pants or shorts. As you progress, you will add a gi so we can train jacket chokes, grips, and more realistic grappling situations. We keep it simple in the beginning and build from there as your skills grow.

Yes. We keep rash guards, gloves, and gi uniforms in stock for convenience. That way you are using gear we trust, and you do not have to guess online or wait for shipping before you can train properly.

Experience, Instructors & Safety

Coach Vlady brings over 45 years of martial arts experience across multiple disciplines, including Kung Fu, Sikaran, Arnis, Sanuces Ryu, Jishin Do, Bissett Jiu Jitsu, Ronin Tai Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Muay Thai. He has taught Canadian Military and Air Force personnel, worked with law enforcement, and served as a Police Officer with the Cree Nation. Every class he runs blends technical detail with real world experience, and students feel that difference from the first session.

Yes. Texas Combat regularly invites guest instructors from military, law enforcement, and advanced martial arts backgrounds. These visits give you access to specialized skill sets and perspectives that most gyms never offer.

Training is supervised, structured, and partner based. We emphasize control, clear communication, and correct technique before intensity. You will never be thrown into chaotic situations without preparation - everything is built step by step so you can train hard and stay safe.

No. You will never be pressured to spar before you are ready. We will build your fundamentals, timing, and confidence first. When live training is introduced, it is done gradually and under close supervision so it becomes a positive learning tool, not something to fear.

Yes. Every class starts with mobility, conditioning, and injury prevention drills. The goal is long term training - staying healthy, building strength, and keeping your body capable for years, not just a few hard weeks.

Yes, as long as it is done respectfully. We support students who want to explore and expand their skills. We simply ask that you represent Texas Combat with professionalism and keep communication open with your coaches here.

Yes. All instructors are qualified and insured for safe, responsible teaching. We take our duty of care seriously both on and off the mats.

Cleanliness is non negotiable. Mats are cleaned daily, and students are expected to maintain clean gear, trimmed nails, and good personal hygiene. A clean gym is safer, more professional, and more respectful for everyone training here.

Women's Self-Defense & Family Training

Our women's training is reality based and scenario driven. You will work on awareness, boundary setting, and practical escape techniques that are designed for real world situations, not choreographed drills. The goal is empowerment - giving you options and confidence, not fear.

Women's sessions are led by Coach Vlady, with female assistants available for additional comfort and support during sensitive drills or scenarios. We work hard to create a training environment where questions and concerns are welcome.

We run monthly women only workshops, with additional shorter mini sessions throughout the year that focus on specific topics like situational awareness, boundary setting, or ground escapes. These are great options if you want focused training without committing to regular weekly classes right away.

Yes. Our family sessions allow parents and children to train side by side. It is an excellent way to build trust, communication, and shared awareness while your child develops discipline and confidence.

Most kids are ready to start around age 6, once they can follow direction and stay engaged. At that age we focus on awareness, discipline, basic movement, and confidence - not hard contact or competition.

Kids learn to stay calm, think clearly, and act responsibly. We do not teach aggression or encourage fighting. Instead, we build awareness, verbal boundaries, and safe escape strategies. The goal is for your child to feel confident and capable without creating problems at school or at home.

Results, Mindset & Training Philosophy

Texas Combat is a reality based combat and self defense school, not a sport only gym. Every drill, scenario, and technique is built around what actually works when things go wrong in the real world. We train for control, decision making, and survivability - not medals or points on a scoreboard.

Train hard. Stay calm. Stay ready. We focus on discipline over ego, composure over chaos, and capability that lasts for life. Physical skill is important, but mindset and control are what truly keep you and your family safe.

Progress is measured in confidence, composure, and skill, not just belts. Our ranking system provides structure and clear goals, but we place just as much value on how you handle pressure, make decisions, and support your training partners on the mat.

Students often report better focus, greater self control, improved health, and a quieter, more grounded confidence in daily life. Many describe the training as life changing - not just physically, but in how they handle stress, conflict, and responsibility outside the gym as well.

Real self defense is not about winning a fight - it is about staying safe and getting home. We train to avoid unnecessary conflict, to control dangerous situations when they cannot be avoided, and to escape with as little damage as possible to everyone involved.

1. Avoid first. Awareness is your best defense. Recognize danger early and create distance when you can.

2. Escape is success. Your goal is not to stand and fight - your goal is to disengage and get to safety.

3. Use only necessary force. Defend yourself to stop the threat, not to punish or seek payback.

4. Stay composed. Breathe, think, and act with control. The mindset you train on the mat is what carries over here.

5. Report the incident. Afterwards, contact the proper authorities and protect yourself legally and ethically.

Logistics, Facilities & Community

Texas Combat is located in Leander, Texas. The full address and map are listed on our contact and schedule pages. We are easy to reach from Leander, Cedar Park, and the North Austin area.

Yes. There is free, on site parking right outside the facility, so you do not have to worry about street parking or long walks before training.

Yes. Our changing areas and restrooms are clean, organized, and maintained regularly. Many students come straight from work, so we keep the space practical and comfortable for quick transitions onto the mat.

Yes. The training space is fully air conditioned and ventilated to handle Texas heat. We want you focused on learning and working hard, not just trying to survive the temperature.

Generally, we do not allow regular spectators on the mat area. Training requires focus and privacy, and people watching from the sidelines can make new students feel self conscious. In some cases, a parent or family member may observe quietly with the instructor's permission, but our priority is always the quality of training for the students on the mat.

At this time, Texas Combat offers male and female washrooms only, and all regular classes are co ed unless otherwise noted, such as women's self defense sessions. We respect everyone who comes here to train seriously and expect all students to act with professionalism and respect toward their partners. Our goal is a safe, disciplined environment for anyone ready to train hard and learn real self defense.

Events, Seminars & Future Programs

Yes. Texas Combat will host seminars and special training events with guest instructors from military, law enforcement, and advanced martial arts backgrounds. These sessions are a chance to go deeper into specific skills like edged weapon defense, control tactics, or scenario training under stress.

Yes. As our student base grows, we plan to offer kids summer camps and intensive youth programs that focus on confidence, discipline, teamwork, and practical self defense while school is out. These camps are designed to be fun, challenging, and positive for both kids and parents.

We plan to be active in the community through local safety expos, fairs, and self defense demonstrations in Leander, Cedar Park, and the greater Austin area. Part of our mission is to help more people understand what real self defense looks like and how mindset and preparation can prevent violence before it starts.

“The goal of self defense is not to fight. It is to think clearly, move with purpose, and make it home safe. Every student should leave here stronger in mind, not just body.”
